FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

The origins of acupuncture lie in Traditional Chinese Medicine (T.C.M.) a highly complex system which has evolved over thousands of years.

It is a system of healing which uses a holistic approach to the management of disease, as well as the maintenance of health.

In simple terms, TCM is based on the belief that vital life energy (Qi) flows around the body in invisible channels known as meridians. Good health depends on the smooth flow of Qi. For a number of lifestyle and environmental reasons Qi can become disturbed, depleted, or blocked, which may result in symptoms of pain, illness, or disease.

Fine, sterile, disposable needles are inserted into specific acu~points to stimulate or disperse, and therefore balance the flow of Qi. In this way the body's own healing response is stimulated, and natural balance is restored.

Treatment is aimed at the root cause of your condition as well as your main symptoms. This approach helps to resolve the main problem as well as enhancing your general feeling of well~being.

WHO HAS ACUPUNCTURE, AND WHY?

People of all ages come to acupuncture for the relief of specific conditions. Some use acupuncture because they feel generally unwell, but have no obvious diagnosis.

ACUTE, CHRONIC, DEGENERATIVE and RECURRING PROBLEMS can be addressed by TCM. Sometimes it can make sense of illnesses that orthodox medicine has difficulty treating.

In some cases treatment can also help to reduce the use of prescribed medication.

You do not have to be unwell to benefit from acupuncture, as treatment helps with general relaxation. It also helps maintain the body's equilibrium.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of sessions needed depends on your individual condition (ie, severity of condition and how long you've had it) as well as your age, plus compliance with treatment! Benefits of acupuncture are progressive. I would recommend trying at least four sessions initially, then reviewing it. Further treatments may be required for more long standing conditions, especially in an older person. In some cases just one or two treatments may suffice, for instance, in acute conditions in a fit and healthy, young person. Some people choose to have regular acupuncture to maintain good health.

WHAT DOES A TREATMENT ENTAIL?

A number of different diagnostic methods are used to get a full picture of your health and lifestyle.

A diagnosis is made by taking a detailed medical and surgical history... Besides looking at the main presenting problem, I will be asking questions about all systems of your body. Please bring along details of your medical and surgical history, and a list of any medication and supplements you are taking.

Further information is gleaned by lookimg at your tongue, and feeling both of your pulses.

Treatment may also involve the use of adjunctive therapies, such as... Massage; Cupping Therapy; Moxibustion; Electro~Acupuncture; and the use of Infra~red Heat Lamps.

Fine needles are inserted painlessley and left in for 20 minutes or longer.

Each treatment is tailored to meet the individual's needs, to facilitate healing on a Mind, Body, Spirit level.

DOES TREATMENT HURT, AND IS IT SAFE?

FINE, STERILE, DISPOSABLE NEEDLES ARE INSERTED PAINLESSLY TO REBALANCE THE BODY.

The needles are as fine as a hair, and are nothing like the needles used in Hospitals.

Treatment is NOT PAINFUL. Clients usually report feeling a tingling sensation, or a feeling of pressure, or heaviness. Some experience a sensation of heat or cold, and a few don't feel anything! Treatment is safe when administered by a qualified Practitioner.

However, if you have a genuine fear of needles, I may be able to put a treatment package together which doesn't involve their use!
